You’re not imagining it …
You’ve seen other entrepreneurs pull off amazing things with AI: Irresistible copy, magnetic subject lines, full-on marketing plans in minutes, and seductive video scripts that grab your attention in seconds.
While you’re left staring at your screen thinking, “Why doesn’t it do that for me?”
You’ve tried all the prompt tricks, enrolled in that influencer course and followed expert advice from YouTube. And yet your results sound mechanical. Flat. A little too much like, well, AI.
And you start to wonder if you missed the secret code everyone else picked up on.
Deep down you can feel the potential. You what’s possible. But you just can’t make it happen.
Well, consider this your make it happen kit.
AI can become your best marketing buddy when you learn to give it what it truly needs.
And here are four simple but powerful avenues that reveal exactly what that is.
1. Specificity Is the Mother of Magic
.
You wouldn’t tell a contractor or architect, “Build me something nice,” and expect a dream home, exactly like you picture it in your head.
But that’s exactly what most people do with AI.
They type in a quick, vague, impersonal prompt and expect a brilliant personal response. What they get instead is a safe, generic answer that you’re terrified everyone’s going to say, “Ah, she’s using AI!”
If you want to avoid that fate – specificity is everything.
The more precisely you describe what you want – tone, length, intended audience, format, even emotional flavor and vibe – the more AI has to work with. And the better the chance you’ll get a result that’s a pleasant surprise.
You can say, “Write a blog post about productivity,” and get a yawn. Or you can say:
Write a warm, conversational 600-word blog post about how creative entrepreneurs can use micro-moments to reignite focus to get more done. In the tone of a trusted friend with a calming but authoritative voice (who’s been there), over a cup of coffee next to the fireplace in an intimate coffee bar.
See the difference?
AI thrives on detail. It mirrors the clarity and emotional color you give it.
So don’t be afraid to pile on specifics. The more you shape your instructions, and infuse them with the vibe you want in return, the more you’ll love what comes out.
2. Let AI Write Your Prompt for You
.
The best way to write killer prompts is to come clean that you don’t have a clue how to do it. Or that you could use a little help.
The crucial thing most beginners miss is: you don’t have to be a prompt-writing genius to get genius results.
In fact, one of the smartest moves you can make is to admit you’re not.
So instead of sweating bullets to craft something that moves the needle, tell AI something like:
“I’m not great at writing prompts yet. I’m trying to create [specific kind of result]. Can you write the best prompt possible that would get that outcome?”
Boom.
AI instantly switches roles — from “answer machine” to “collaborative strategist.”
It’ll often surprise you with a beautifully structured prompt you can reuse again and again.
You’ll learn how it thinks, while getting the result you actually wanted in the first place.
It’s the best shortcut to sounding like an expert, even when you’re just starting out.
3. Ask Before You Execute
.
Here’s another one that takes the pressure off and lets you breathe a bit easier:
Once you’ve finished your prompt, don’t hit enter yet.
Pause. And ask AI does it need any other details that will help deliver the exact result you’re looking for.
Which may sound like:
Before you execute this prompt, is there anything else you need to know or any questions you’d like answers to? That will help you deliver an amazing result, that’s exactly what my clients are looking for, spoken in a way that lets them know I feel what they’re going through.
Maybe it needs more detail about your audience.
Maybe it needs a deeper dive on the exact tone you want.
Maybe it’s missing context about your brand or goals.
In many cases disappointing outputs come from incomplete inputs.
By letting AI ask you questions that can fill-in gaps in its understanding before it runs, you give it the power to fine-tune before it starts. And that single step can be what you need to level up your results.
4. Have AI cop to what it messed up.
.
Even after you get a result that looks pretty good (and especially when you get one that doesn’t) take it one step further.
Ask AI:
Give me the seven most impactful ways you could improve this result.
Or, if you know what’s missing or what you’re looking for, include that:
I was really looking for something stronger. My clients are CEOs or upper management and they can take really straight-forward guidance. Can you give me 7 ways you could make this result much stronger and more frank. I don’t want to brow-beat them. But I don’t want to sugar coat things either.
Then sit back and watch what it delivers.
You’ll often get gold — deeper examples, sharper phrasing, stronger structure, more emotional pull.
Ready for a bonus?
After it gives you the 7 ways to take the result closer to what you want:
- Ask it to regentegrate the result, including those seven improvements.
- Then ask it to redraft your original prompt to include the 7 suggested improvements.
So in the future, you get the exact results you’re looking for the FIRST TIME THROUGH.
The Real Magic You’ve Been Looking For
The thing to really understand (and it’s a relief!) is there’s no wand to wave. Or series of secret commands.
The folks who are getting the results you want aren’t better than you or smarter than you. You just need to do what they’re doing to get the results they’re getting.
Because when you:
Get specific about what you want.
Let AI help you write stronger prompts.
Ask if it needs more information before it begins.
Have it improve its own work before you finalize.
You’re no longer wishing for magic — you’re creating it.
And the best part?
These steps are profoundly powerful, even if you’re a skeptic, even if you’ve never written a single “perfect” prompt in your life.
Because making a massive leap in your AI outcomes isn’t about luck. Or being a super nerd. It’s about using consistent simple practices, noticing what works best, and making that part of your ‘every time’ workflow.
And that’s when what’s possible with AI becomes your floor … instead of your ceiling.
This is super useful, Rob. THANKS!!!
Awesome Liz! Glad you will be able to put these nuggets into action.
So spot on – once again, there is no ‘magic wand.’ Excellent advice, as always Rob! Thanks!
Thank you Deborah. Glad this was helpful!
Beautifully stated Robert.
Thanks for not just cutting through the noise, but elegantly showing us how to elevate our use of AI as a collaborative tool
Glad you found this valuable Bill. Yes, sometimes the most valuable results AI gives you is after it gives you the initial one. You direct it, not the other way around.
