No one plans on struggling when they make the leap from a job into their own business.
But it’s one big mistake they make when starting out that ensures their business ends up in the ditch.
And what mistake is that?
People start with things they want to do because there’s so much hype and excitement around them:
- People want to do workshops.
- People want to write books.
- People want to create courses.
- People want to pull of a big ‘ol launch.
It’s not that you can’t make a lot of money from these avenues eventually.
It’s that these are exactly the wrong things to do when you’re starting out if you need to make money quickly.
And if you’re starting out … you do.
Getting your heart set on the way you believe you need to do things, is the best way to ensure your business never gets out of neutral.
The good news is:
The most important things you need to get clear on before you start is the answer to 1 question.
And one simple model.
Here’s the question and the model:
If you’d like to replace a $70K annual income:
QUESTION: What valuable outcome would someone pay me 5k for?
MODEL: Find and enroll 14 of those people.
If 5k sounds a bit scary, you can go with:
QUESTION: What valuable outcome would someone pay me 4k for?
MODEL: Find and enroll 18 of those people
Or dial it back a bit further:
QUESTION: What valuable outcome would someone pay me 3k for?
MODEL: Find and enroll 24 of those people
Now because this is YOUR business it’s important that this outcome is one that you help make possible and enjoy working on.
Equally important is getting clear on an ideal client willing to pay for this outcome.
But the crucial core idea to get up to speed fast with a new business is that simple.
So .. if it’s that simple, why do so many of us go wrong?
The obstacle: Fear.
$$Because so many of us have so little experience charging that much for what we do, it scares the you-know-what out of us.
But it’s the exact model every coach or consultant I know who hit six figures in a year used.
No crazy launches. No funnels. No wigged-out complicated collection of tools or techniques.
And NONE of them were tech wizards.
- They simply focused on an outcome their ideal client craved and valued.
- Were confident the amount that client would pay for that outcome.
- And found a simple, repeatable way to get in front of and communicate that value to enough of those ideal clients so they would jump at the chance to work with them.
Now I get it: The idea of selling a book, course or workshop seems a lot less stressful than selling something for 5k.
The problem is: What it takes to make good money quickly selling lower ticket items like books, workshops or courses (starting from zero) is incredibly stressful (if not impossible).
If you’ve been churning away for $25 an hour, I totally get the idea of charging someone $5k or $4k or even $3k for anything can feel terrifying.
But there’s a simple way around that.
The solution: Start with them.
Notice there’s one simple difference between the model that works, time after time, and the one that doesn’t:
The model that doesn’t work starts with YOU:
Your workshop idea. Your book. Your course. The thing you are in love with, that you think is cool. That you have your heart set on.
The model that works starts with THEM.
The outcome / result / transformation they will pay for because THEY are in love with it. Because THEY think is cool.
And because THEY value that outcome more than holding onto the money it takes to achieve it.
Which brings us to the big-aha at the heart of it all:
People will pay a lot more for the thing they think is cool than the thing you think is cool.
Now ideally they are both the same thing.
The key is not to fall in love with what you want to do, and hope they ‘get it.’
The key is to match what they want and value, with the skill and genius you bring to the table that helps them have it.
As my friend Kristin Thompson says, “Now we’re cookin’ with gas!”
Will you still have to work to make this happen? Yes.
Will you still have to get up to speed on new skills to make it work? Yes.
Will you still have to fall down and get up, apply what you learned, and try again? Of course.
But once you learn those skills, it’s a lot simpler to make 14 sales than it is to make:
141 sales of a $497 course.
355 sales of a $197 workshop.
2593 sales of a $27 eBook.
Your business is not an exercise in self-gratification.
Where you are entitled to get paid for something just because you think its grand.
Your business is a vehicle to provide value to people who can benefit from that value. Who have made their desire for that value enough of a priority that they will pay you handsomely for it.
Of course you also want your business to create fulfillment, expression, provide for those you love and build an unshakable foundation of freedom into your life.
But that ONLY happens when you provide an outcome and an avenue your ideal clients will pay handsomely for.
Instead of one you’re hoping they will.
And if figuring out where to find people who will pay you big-time for your talent is making your head spin …
… I’ve created something that shortens the curve.
It’s a guide, that lists 21 ideas, avenues and places to find your ideal high end clients. Who not only have the money to pay you, but are already looking for you.
