It’s a question I am asked more than any other:
“Is this a catchy enougn title? Will it make my people want to sign up?”
And the answer is crucial.
Because over the course of your business you’re going to have to come up with great titles time and time again.
Sure, if you’re a big name you can read the phone book. And people will sign-up to watch.
But how many of us are big names?
That’s why I want to introduce you to the most effective title format I have ever used.
So you use it to grow your list, your following and your bottom line.
This post is for you if:
- You’ve stopped yourself from clicking the send button because the title of your free gift, webinar, online challenge or program just didn’t cut it.
- You struggle to come up with titles that capture the magic and power of what you do.
- You’d love to be able to come up with titles that capture attentiion, and MOVE your ideal clients to take the action you want them to.
So why is a catchy title so important?
- It captures attention
- It calls out or hints at the problem your offering solves.
- It offers a solution to that problem.
And does it in a way that compels your prospect to want to know more.
It’s a riddle, that creates intense, almost unbearable curiosity and yearning for the answer.
And when it’s solved, it eliminates one of the core urgent problems your ideal client has been struggling with a long time.
So it not only offers a way out – but deliverance!
Deliverance from the problem.
Deliverance to the magic world that exists BEYOND the problem.
The world they want to know about. The world you have the key to.
And there’s a title format I’ve used that combines all of these that’s worked magic for me and my clients. And opened the doorway to hundreds of thousands in revenue.
It’s called:
A HOOK. AND A HANKERIN’.
These two simple components create a magnetic pull towards whatever it is you want you followers to take action on.
Because it not only captures their attention instantly. But deepens that initial excitement to an insatiable thirst and yearning that moves them through their resistance.
And prompts them to willingly and enthusiastically take action.
And here’s how to pull it off!

The first part is THE HOOK.
It creates that initial whiplash of interest and attention so crucial in today’s noisy world.
Your hook is what we usually think of as a title.
- It’s short and catchy.
- It may be rhythmic.
- It may rhyme or feature words that start with the same letter.
It grabs their attention, stops their scroll, interrupts their pattern and gets them to notice. It may even make them smile or laugh.
But above all, the best hooks trigger an immediate involuntary emotional response. Like this guy:

But a hook, by itself, is not enough.
While the initial buzz is there, novelty has an extremely short shelf life.
You may have discovered yourself that “cute and clever” doesn’t pay well.
“They all laughed when I said the title! Why didn’t they sign up?”
You need something more. You need:

The second part that we call:
THE HANKERIN’.
The specific thing they have a “top of mind / gotta have it now” desire for.
A Hankerin’ is a slang term expressing desire for something specific you want right now.
That’s satisfying. That hits the spot. That scratches an itch.
As in:
“I got a hankerin’ for a hot bar-b-que chicken pizza with melty cheese”.
Or “
I got a hankerin’ for lighting a fire in the fireplace and snuggling on the couch while we watch a really silly romantic comedy on Netflix.”
And here is one of the keys to a hankerin’ that can light a fire under your list building or webinar attendance:
Hankerin’s are very SPECIFIC. And are all about what you want right now.
- It’s hard to have a hankerin’ for “abundance.”
- You can’t get a hankerin’ for “being all you can be”. Or “realizing your potential”.
- You can’t get a hankerin’ for “letting your inner light shine.”
You CAN get a hankerin’ for the specific, tagible form those take that you are awesome at delivering.
A Hook and a Hankerin’ works because the combination of the novelty of the hook snd the compelling possibility of the hankerin’ to satisfy a compelling desire, move your ideal client to action.
And action is what you want.
