I probably don’t have to tell you: Email marketing is more of a struggle than ever.

This definitely ain’t the good ‘ol days when it was easier to grow your list. Easier to engage subscribers. And easier to get people to open and read your emails.

But email can still play a pivotal role in your online success plan.

As long as you craft provocative subject lines that trigger intrigue, curiosity and grab attention!

Because in order for your followers to:

Sign up for your webinar
Enroll in your coaching
Purchase your product

And do all the things that lead to big boosts in your bottom line, they FIRST have to open your emails!

So … to give you a head start on crafting tantalizing, teasing subject lines that compel them to open up:

I created a list of the 9 most magnetic kinds of subject lines, I’ve returned to again and again during my 15+ years of online business.

Including the keys that make them so compelling. And even a few examples for each category!

Be sure to bookmark and share with clients or colleagues who might benefit from a rush of excitement, interest and buzz … AND the higher open rate that’s the first step to a lead becoming a client!

Curiosity

While you want an element of curiosity in all your subject lines, for some it’s the main attraction. Many subject lines in the remaining 8 categories leverage curiosity. The difference is in the in this category, curiosity / mystery / intrigue is the primary driver moving your prospects to open your emails.

IMPORTANT: When crafting your curiosity subject lines, be careful not to cross the bridge from curiosity to confusion. If you get too outlandish or too off topic in trying to drive curiosity, you will confuse your potential reader.

Or make them feel manipulated when your subject line doesn’t match your content in any way.

EXAMPLES:

I wish I’d known this when I was starting out
You have been asking … begging … and now it’s here.
I won’t rest until you know this
[Truth] If you don’t handle this, you’re toast
Even Oprah doesn’t know about this

Questions

Questions are powerful because they open a loop of mystery in the mind of your reader. And if there’s one thing that drives us nuts, it’s an unresolved mystery. (Ever misplace your TV remote? Or your phone?)

If the question is provocative enough, it will drive your reader to open the email to find the answer.

EXAMPLES:

Will your business be a survivor or a statistic?
Is the internet killing your business?
Would it be OK if I made this easy?
Is the Lone Ranger thing getting a bit old?

Gift / Surprise

We all love getting stuff! Especially when it helps us with something we are struggling with. And especially when it’s free! These subject lines point to a gift / resource / or solution you are offering your reader. To find out what it is, and get it, they have to open up!

EXAMPLES:

[Free Gift] I know I shouldn’t be doing this
I’m not stopping with a free chapter
I’ve never given this away before

Last Chance

It’s true: One of the biggest incentives that drives folks to sign up for our webinars or enroll in our programs is the regret of missing out. We are all deadline driven creatures, and our tendency is to delay action until we absolutely have to.

Your “last chance” subject lines add that extra urgency that prompt your prospect to take action NOW.

I know these are used A LOT. That’s because they work.

EXAMPLES:

Soon … it will be gone.
It’s the end of the road. Really.
The final time.
Just a few hours left

Tips, Tools, Resources

It’s hard to resist an on-target tip, tool or resource. Especially when it can make a huge difference in your health, business, finances, relationship — you know, the BIG things so many of us are after.

So a subject line which hints at tips your market is already searching for can be a huge incentive to open your emails.

Success!

Success is something we just can’t get enough of. No matter how many books we’ve read, or workshops we’ve attended, we want more. So when your subject line promises to elevate your readers’ success, there’s a good chance they won’t be able to resist.

NOTE: Success subject lines are a bit different from Outcome / Inspiration (we’ll get to those in a bit) in that they tend to be more general. While the Outcome subject lines deal with desired outcomes that are much more specific.

EXAMPLES:

The way you handle this determines your success
The missing piece of your success picture
What makes my blood boil can make you business skyrocket
Success – stark raving simple

Money

A colleague once said, “Money isn’t the most important thing in life, but it touches everything that is.”

So is it any wonder subject lines that refer to money challenges or target a money breakthrough or outcome, have terrific open rates. AND attract the folks on your list who are ready to take action.

EXAMPLES:

Problem / Pain

I know: You’re a positive person.

But guess what? Your ideal prospects are in pain. There’s something missing. There’s something they need to conquer. There’s something they’re struggling with. There’s something they want. So when you are able to target their agitation with a powerful subject line:

That lets them know you get it
And you have something to help

The respond because you don’t have to “convince them. They are already seeking the outcome you offer!

EXAMPLES:

The problem isn’t you, it’s what you*re doing
Escape the madness (this changed my life)
Time to tackle this head on
Stop moving from crisis to crisis

Outcome / Inspiration

The flip side of pain are subject lines that hone in on a specific outcome your market wants. Or promise an inspiration that can help them deal with their struggles. The more specific the outcome you describe, and the more your prospects want it, the more they will respond!

EXAMPLES:

You have no idea how close you are
They’ll rush to the back of the room for you
I knew this would be perfect for you
They had a breakthrough (so can you)

Sure, there are a ton of bright-shiny social avenues to connect with your ideal clients.

But its a fact:

The most successful people I know use email to make their business more successful.  They aren’t jumping off the ship.  But they are taking important steps to make sure it keeps sailing.
